Bruises Really Do Make for Better Conversation

Isaiah's Lips Anointed with Fire

Isaiah’s Lips Anointed with Fire.
That had to hurt.

As much as I don’t want to admit it, “These bruises make for better conversation.”

I’m not a big fan of Train, but that part of their song Bruises reveals real truth about the human condition. Everyone has hurt they don’t like to talk about, but a conversation about those wounds is the start of real healing. There is a real need to be honest about the bruises we’ve experienced, as well as some we may have inflicted.

The prophet Isaiah wrote of bruises that bring an even more fundamental healing to the human condition, bruises endured by a Messiah who would come 700 years later.

…He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
upon Him was the chastisement that made us whole,
and with His stripes we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:5 RSV)

Better conversations begin with talking about bruises. Better yet conversations, those about the terminal wound of sin on all humanity and the scorn Jesus took for us, can be rich and life-giving. The healing of the Gospel itself begins with accidental melodies:

You’re not alone in how you’ve been
Everybody loses, we all got bruises
